Lilongwe Water Board (LWB) today presented initiatives to Katobo Primary School and Malingunde School for the Blind in Malingunde as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility program. Both schools sit very close to Kamuzu Dam 1, which is the Board’s primary water source, along the Lilongwe River. Deputy Minister of Water and Sanitation, Honorable Liana Chapota Kakhobwe, M.P. presided over the ceremony.
LWB has renovated two classroom blocks, constructed three sanitary facilities, and provided eighty desks and one thousand textbooks to Katobo Primary School. In the past, students had to learn in dilapidated classrooms that lacked the necessary facilities for the learning process. Assorted food items and support equipment were also donated to Malingunde School for the Blind by the Board.
Making the donations, Hon Kakhobwe expressed her gratitude to LWB for ensuring communities around its water source benefit from the Board’s work. She further applauded the Board for creating an environment where young people can flourish and thrive. Kakhobwe appealed to the community to rally behind the Board’s efforts and work tirelessly to ensure that every child receives the education they deserve. He also asked for collaborative efforts with other stakeholders in classroom construction.
His Royal Majesty Inkosi ya Makhosi M’mbelwa V, Chairperson of LWB, indicated that the Board understands the needs of the communities around its catchment area and it remains committed to giving back to them in ways that will benefit them for a long time. He further committed to ensuring that communities around Kamuzu Dam 1 benefit from potable water.
Member of Parliament for the area, Honourable Francis Belekanyama thanked the Board for keeping their word on the project. He also appealed for further support in the conservation of the catchment area. His gratitude was also echoed by the school committee chair and officials from the Ministry of Education.
Today’s CSR initiatives are a continued display of commitment to giving back to the community by the Board, which is currently implementing several initiatives across its supply area.
