Mbadzi Groundwater Project

RATIONALE/PROJECT OBJECTIVE

Malawi’s Agenda 2063, coupled with LWB’s 2020–2025 Strategic Plan, identified the development of new water sources as one of the strategies to achieve the objective of providing an adequate 24-hour water supply. Among the activities for this strategy include the development of groundwater source.

This project’s objective was to improve the continuity of water supply in Airwing, Mbabzi, and surrounding areas which hitherto had been experiencing water supply challenges. The project targets about 58,000 people and includes a complete package of three (3) eMadzi model (self-vending) kiosks for the surrounding peri-urban community at Mbadzi.

  • 6km of Pipelines to connect the borehole pumps to a common tank
  • A circular metallic Ground Tank/Sump of capacity 600m3
  • 2 No. Surface pumps to pump water from the Tank and Mbadzi to the 6000m3 Tank at Airwing.
  •  A 5km 300/250mm Ductile Iron pipe transmission line to convey water from Mbadzi to Airwing
  • A 250kVA Solar PV plant to provide continuous power for both surface and submersible pumps.
